Treveri Cellars Blanc de Blancs, Columbia Valley, Washington

Domaine Ste Michelle Brut, Columbia Valley, Washington

When it comes to celebrating Independence Day, what better way than to pop open a sparkling wine produced in the United States? There are certainly plenty of good-quality, affordable ones, including those made through the process known as the méthode champenoise or méthode traditionnelle. This labor-intensive method, which is used to make real French Champagne, requires the wine to go through a second fermentation in its own bottle rather than a tank. The following are two examples.

Treveri Cellars Blanc de Blancs, Columbia Valley, Washington

Bought • Total Wine & More, 90 Brentwood Promenade Court, in June for $10.99

Description • It’s hard to beat such a good domestic méthode champenoise wine at this price. What makes it even more unusual, is that it’s a blanc de blancs, meaning it’s made solely from white grapes — in this case chardonnay. It comes from the family-owned Treveri Cellars, which focuses on 100% varietal sparkling wines. Elegant, delicate and refreshing, this dry sparkler tastes of crisp green apples and ends with a long, citrusy finish. It can be enjoyed on its own or with snacks, seafood and other light fare.

Bought • Total Wine & More, 90 Brentwood Promenade Court, in June for $13.99

Description • If you like your sparkling wines with just a touch of sweetness, give this one a try. Although it’s labeled brut, which means dry, this wine borders on off-dry. It comes from Domaine Ste Michelle, Washington State’s oldest winery and one of its largest. A blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, this is a more complex and bigger-bodied wine that tastes of stone fruit, apples and citrus. It would go great with popcorn and other salty snacks, spicy Asian cuisine and even dessert.
