Undercover Stings Crack Down On Fireworks: Riverside County | Lake Elsinore, CA Patch

LAKE ELSINORE, CA — As the July 4 holiday approaches, the sheriff's department and local police agencies, along with Cal Fire, have warned they are cracking down on the sale and use of fireworks across Riverside County, including sparklers.

Only the four desert cities of Blythe, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs and Indio allow the sale and use of state-approved "safe and sane" fireworks. However, it's illegal to buy fireworks in one of those cities and transport/sell/use them outside of their respective city limits.

To keep illegal fireworks out of their city, Lake Elsinore deputies are even going undercover.

On Wednesday, they arrested 31-year-old Danish Saleem during a sting operation.

The bust occurred after Danish had requested to meet law enforcement posing as fireworks buyers. He showed up at the agreed upon Grape Street location with a stash, including Cherry Bombs, Saturn Battery’s, Jumbo Parachutes, and 5” XL Canister Shells, according to the sheriff's department.

Instead of making a sale, Danish was arrested and booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center. He's due in court Aug. 5.

Residents who want to report non-emergency illegal fireworks can call the sheriff's department at 951-776-1099. If it's an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

In Southwest Riverside County, the cities of Lake Elsinore and Menifee are planning live fireworks shows. Read about the July 4 Lake Elsinore show, and Menifee's June 27 show.
