Bonfire Night is back this year, and families across the North East are making sure it will be a night to remember at the many organised events held in our area.

But if you are planning to make your own fun at home, make sure you follow the rules to avoid being fined up to £5,000.

You probably already know that under-18s cannot buy fireworks, but even for adults, there are strict rules in place about when and where you can set fireworks off.

The law states you must not set off fireworks, including sparklers, in the street or other public places, so if you’re planning on celebrating with even just a few sparklers, make sure you’re doing it in your own garden or a friend’s.

Bonfire Night revellers are granted a one hour extension to the ban on setting off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, when they are allowed to enjoy their bangers up until midnight, but only on November 5.

This means any Bonfire Night displays must be wrapped up at midnight to avoid hosts getting into trouble.

On New Year’s Eve, Diwali, and Chinese New Year, the cut-off is extended to 1am.

The window for buying fireworks for private use on Bonfire Night opens on October 15 and closes on November 10.

New Year revellers only have from December 26-31 to stock up, and if you celebrate Diwali and Chinese New Year, you will have to wait until just three days before the event to stock up.

Individuals can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally, and could also get an on the spot fine of £90.

You were probably aware that there are restrictions around when fireworks can be bought, but did you know there are four different categories of fireworks?

Category 1 covers sparklers and celebration cake 'fountain' sparklers, category 2 covers 'garden' fireworks and must be watched from a minimum of 5m away.

Category 3 fireworks are the largest available to the public, but must be viewed from 25 metres away or more, so if you have a smaller garden, stick to the smaller fireworks.

Category 4 fireworks that are only available for professionals for use in large displays, and cannot be bought by the public.

If you plan on setting off fireworks yourself, it’s best to be considerate and check if your neighbours have nervous animals so they can prepare ahead of time to keep them calm and happy.

For those planning to create their own display, we have rounded up the range of fireworks available - from sparklers to finale boxes - from major supermarkets.

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has announced that if will not be selling fireworks for the third year running, but over-18s can stock up instore at all of the other UK chains. None of the supermarkets are selling fireworks online.

Asda has confirmed that it will be selling both traditional and low/no noise varieties of fireworks in its stores for Bonfire Night.

Prices range from 50p for a gold sparkler up to £50 for its Spectacular Party pack, which is sold as an 'all-in party'.

Aldi has rated all fireworks according to their volume this year, and has increased the number of low-noise options.

Fellow German discounter Lidl is offering prices range from £1.99 for sparklers to £49.99, but do check that your local store is stocking fireworks, as not all are.
