A project in Tehama County is among the 39 statewide projects to receive funding for multi-beneficial ecosystem restoration and protection program under Prop. 1 watershed restoration and Prop. 68 grants through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The awards, totaling $48.5 million, were made under two separate solicitations for projects focused in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and watersheds statewide.

Funding in the amount of $374,5887 for the Tehama County waterways site will go to Point Blue Conservation Science to implement planning for the Restoration of the Deer Creek Headwaters at Childs Meadow project near Mineral.

The 48 mile-long Deer Creek watershed drains from its headwaters point of 7,866 feet at Butt Mountain in eastern Tehama County to its confluence with the Sacramento River at 360 feet elevation near Vina. Except for three small diversions, the watershed is undammed and provides critical habitat for salmon and steelhead, in particular spring-run Chinook salmon.

“This year represents new opportunities for important projects getting off the ground, including long-planned efforts to support recovery of critical species and respond to new ecological challenges,” said Fish and Wildlife Department Director Charlton H. Bonham. “We look forward to continuing statewide restoration and protection efforts of our state’s watersheds.”

This year marks the department’s first allocation of Prop. 68 funding and the fifth of 10 planned annual allocations of Proposition 1 funding.
