The Queen's eldest and second sons, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, both proposed to their respective future wives in the 1980s. Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were given very different engagement rings, but both iconic sparklers have gone down in royal history. Four years ago in 2018, Princess Eugenie debuted an engagement ring from Jack Brooksbank that bears striking similarities to both Diana and Sarah's engagement rings.

On January 22, 2018, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's younger daughter Princess Eugenie announced her engagement to Jack Brooksbank.

The pair had been dating for several years before the proposal, and the couple were all smiles as they posed for pictures in the Picture Gallery of Buckingham Palace.

Eugenie and Jack had got engaged earlier that month during a visit to Nicaragua, where Jack proposed to the Princess in front of a volcano.

Eugenie told BBC's The One Show: "The lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen.

"I actually said this is an incredible moment, and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years.

"I was over the moon. [It was a] complete surprise. But it was the perfect moment, we couldn't be happier."

Princess Eugenie's engagement ring from Jack has a rare coral-coloured padparadscha sapphire at its centre.

Rather than the traditional dark blue colour commonly associated with sapphires, the padparadscha sapphire is famed for its pink-orange hue.

Jack actually didn't propose to Eugenie with the ring, despite choosing the unique stone at a jeweller beforehand, to ensure Eugenie could "sign off" on the ring before he purchased it.

The choice of precious stone in Eugenie's ring echoes the engagement ring of another famous royal, Princess Diana.

Lady Diana Spencer debuted a dark blue sapphire engagement ring in 1981 upon her engagement to Prince Charles.

Sapphires are also a firm favourite of Princess Anne, it appears, as both of her engagement rings from ex-husband Captain Mark Phillips and Sir Timothy Laurence have featured sapphires.

Like Diana's ring, Eugenie's sapphire is also surrounded by a ring of smaller diamonds.

While it isn't known if Eugenie's engagement ring was inspired by her mother Sarah, Duchess of York's engagement ring, there are some striking similarities between the gems.

Eugenie's padparadscha sapphire is surrounded by diamonds in a style known as a cluster ring.

By arranging the diamonds in this way, the ring looks like a flower shape with the padparadscha at the centre.

Prince Andrew gave Sarah Ferguson an engagement ring with a ruby surrounded by a halo of diamonds.

And like Eugenie's ring, Sarah's engagement ring also resembled the shape of a flower.

Although two different gemstones, the tone of Sarah's ruby is close to the hue of Eugenie's sapphire.

And both dazzling gems sit on a gold band rather than a platinum band like other royal engagement rings.
