ORANGE COUNTY, CA —With tinder dry conditions, Orange County's emergency responders warn all to be wary of the dangers of using fireworks as the Fourth of July approaches.

Only ten Orange County cities allow the use of "safe and sane" fireworks. Cities that allow the use of state-approved fireworks include: Anaheim, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Stanton, Villa Park and Westminster.

State-approved fireworks are clearly marked with the state fire marshal's approval and are often sold at fundraising booths in cities that permit their usage.

Orange County cities not listed ban the use of all fireworks, with many issuing hefty fines for their use.

"You can possess safe and sane fireworks no matter where you are," Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a previous interview. "But you can only utilize them in [the cities that allow them]. Unincorporated Orange County is not included in that list."

Possession of illegal fireworks can lead to a $1,000 fine or more, Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes noted.

Spitzer added that a year in jail is also in the mix, but the punishment could be up to nine years in prison if a first responder is injured by fireworks.
